Winter marine engine maintenance in Barcelona

An extended period of inactivity can leave faults undiscovered until the vessel is needed again. The scope depends on the engine, hours, service history, operating profile and expected return-to-service date.

There is no universal package. Include the engine details, service history and winter location so that the appropriate work can be assessed.

When to plan it

Resolve over winter what should not wait until the season.

A planned review may be appropriate when:

  • The season has ended and hours- or calendar-based maintenance is due.
  • The vessel will remain idle for several months.
  • The service history is incomplete or unknown.
  • Alarms or irregular behaviour appeared during recent passages.
  • The engine condition needs to be understood before considering major work.
  • The expected return-to-service date leaves time for planned maintenance.

This page covers engine maintenance and associated systems confirmed for each case. It does not offer vessel storage, haul-out or complete lay-up.

A scope for each installation

The engine, hours, service history and expected winter use determine which scheduled maintenance and checks are appropriate. The website does not replace the manufacturer's schedule or a technical inspection.

The systems included are agreed before work proceeds. CATMAR does not publish fixed packages, universal prices or undocumented breakdown-prevention figures.

Planning the work

The work is best requested after the main operating season, before an extended idle period or with sufficient lead time before recommissioning. Dates depend on schedule, location, access and agreed scope.

CATMAR works from the Port Balís workshop and may attend onboard where the work and planning allow. Availability and timing are confirmed after reviewing the enquiry.

Engines supported

Maintenance based on the engine and installation.

Support is confirmed according to the model, required work, vessel location and technical or parts availability.

  • CATMAR is an Official Volvo Penta Service.
  • CATMAR is an Official STEYR Marine, Yamaha Marine and VETUS Service; CATMAR also services Honda Marine and other makes according to equipment and scope.
  • YANMAR marine engine maintenance and repair.

For other makes, CATMAR first confirms the model, requested work and technical or parts availability.

Working process

Prepare, agree and check.

  1. Initial details

Vessel, engine, location, approximate hours and available service history.

  2. Expected use

Period of inactivity, winter operating profile and return-to-service date.

  3. Proposed scope

Preventive work is defined for the engine and the vessel's situation.

  4. Authorisation

The intervention proceeds once the scope has been confirmed.

  5. Next steps

Relevant findings and recommendations are recorded for the completed work.

Prepare the request

Details that help define the maintenance scope

The assessment is more useful when it includes:

  • Make and model

Include the serial number if available and any other equipment identification.

  • Approximate hours

Provide current engine hours and the date or hours of the last known service.

  • Recent history

Note recent work, replacement parts, alarms or irregular behaviour during the season.

  • Idle period

Explain whether the vessel will remain in use or lie idle, and for how long.

  • Location and access

Port, berth or yard, together with any known access arrangements.

  • Return to service

Share an indicative date; it is not reserved until scope and schedule are confirmed.

This list prepares the assessment. The technical worklist is agreed for each engine and is not published until validated by Operations.

Frequently asked questions

Before planning the winter period

What does winter engine maintenance include?

There is no single package for every vessel. The scope is based on the engine, hours, service history, installation, expected use and return-to-service date.

Is this a storage or complete lay-up service?

No. This page is limited to engine maintenance and the associated systems CATMAR confirms. It does not offer haul-out, storage or complete vessel lay-up.

When should the work be requested?

After the main operating season, before an extended idle period or with sufficient time before recommissioning. The date is confirmed according to schedule, location, access and scope.

Is the requested date reserved when the form is submitted?

No. A request does not constitute a booking or acceptance.

Will the vessel remain idle this winter?

Include the engine make, model, approximate hours, service history and location. Scope and timing are confirmed only after the request is reviewed through an authorised channel.
