Marine engine diagnostics and repair in Barcelona

When an engine fails to start, loses power, overheats, produces abnormal smoke or triggers an alarm, the underlying cause needs to be identified before parts are replaced.

Include the port, engine make and model, symptoms and operational status.

Typical faults

Symptoms guide the review. Checks identify the cause.

These are useful starting points when describing the problem:

  • Starting, battery-charging or fuel-supply issues.
  • Overheating and cooling-system faults.
  • Alarms, display warnings and loss of performance.
  • Leaks, vibration, unusual noise or abnormal smoke.
  • Overdue maintenance or an incomplete service history.
  • Propulsion and transmission issues within the confirmed technical scope.
  • Assessment ahead of a major repair or engine replacement.

This list helps structure a request; it is not a remote diagnosis. Different faults can produce similar symptoms.

Diagnosis before repair

An alarm or fault code can guide the review, but it does not replace verification of the underlying cause. We combine the reported symptoms, alarms and recent history with inspection of the engine and related systems.

Where the initial information is not enough to scope a repair reliably, we explain the diagnostic or inspection step that makes sense and what can be defined before further work proceeds.

Workshop or onboard

Some checks and jobs can be completed at the berth. Others require workshop facilities, dismantling or parts coordination. The appropriate route depends on the vessel, access, port and intervention.

CATMAR works from Port Balís and provides technical service across Barcelona, the Maresme —including El Masnou— and selected Catalan ports when the scope and planning allow. Permanent presence or immediate attendance is not promised.

Engines and applications

The make matters. So does the complete installation.

Support for a specific job is confirmed according to the model, installation, work required, location and technical or parts availability.

  • CATMAR is an Official Volvo Penta Service.
  • CATMAR is an Official STEYR Marine, Yamaha Marine and VETUS Service; CATMAR also services Honda Marine and other makes according to equipment and scope.
  • Cummins and Cummins Onan technical service
  • YANMAR marine engine maintenance and repair.

For other makes, we first review the equipment details and requested work.

Working process

Useful information. Reasoned decisions.

  1. Initial information

Engine, location, operational status, symptoms, alarms and available material.

  2. Next-step review

We determine whether onboard attendance, workshop inspection or further information is appropriate.

  3. Diagnostics

The system is inspected to distinguish the underlying cause from its effects.

  4. Agreed scope

Work proceeds after the intervention has been defined and authorised.

  5. Final checks

The checks are appropriate to the completed work and the installation.

Prepare the request

What to observe before contacting us

Share only information that can be obtained safely:

  • The engine does not start or starts irregularly

Tell us whether the starter turns and whether an alarm or message is displayed.

  • Overheating

Stop the engine in accordance with the manufacturer's procedure, do not press on, and note the visible alarm.

  • Loss of power

Note the rpm at which it occurs, when it started and whether it follows recent work or changes in load.

  • Abnormal smoke

Describe the colour and whether it appears at start-up, under acceleration or at steady load.

  • New vibration or noise

Indicate the approximate source and whether the behaviour changes with rpm.

  • A leak

Identify whether it appears to be oil, fuel or coolant and do not handle the area unless it is safe to do so.

  • Alarm or display message

Record the exact text or code and the conditions under which it appears.

Do not remove guards or handle fuel, electrical systems or hot components to complete the request.

Frequently asked questions

Before requesting a quote

Can you quote from the initial information alone?

A clear fault description helps to prepare the next step, but different faults can share symptoms. Where a reliable scope cannot be defined, an initial diagnostic or inspection step will be proposed.

Do you work onboard or at the workshop?

It depends on the vessel, access, location and work. Some checks can be completed onboard; other interventions require workshop facilities.

What information should I send?

Engine make and model, serial number if available, vessel location, approximate hours, symptoms, alarms, recent history and operational status.

Does submitting the request confirm a quote or attendance?

No. Submission does not constitute a diagnosis, quotation, booking or acceptance. CATMAR will review the information once an authorised receiving channel is available.

Request a quote

Send the engine details and describe the fault.

Tell us where the vessel is, the engine make and model, its operational status and what is happening. We will review the information and confirm the next step once the receiving channel is authorised.
