WORK CARRIED OUT BY CATMAR

Superyacht tenders: Volvo Penta D6 and DPH

Engine maintenance and repairs to cooling, steering and driveline components. A closer look at the equipment and workshop work.

Hydraulic workshop press used to extract a seized steering component

From scheduled maintenance to corrective repairs

Inspection identified deposits in the cooling circuits, seized steering components and water damage in the driveline. The work combined engine maintenance with the repairs required for each installation.

Cooling

Disassembly, cleaning and new seals

Salt and sediment deposits had built up in the tube bundles. The heat exchanger, intercooler and fuel cooler were removed and dismantled to access their internal components.

The work included mechanical and chemical cleaning, replacement of seals and O-rings, reassembly and a coolant change. The complete seawater pumps were also replaced.

Steering and controls

Restoring steering operation

Salt accumulation had seized steering components. Extraction required mechanical work in the workshop using controlled heat and a hydraulic press.

Steering helm pumps, hydraulic distributors and deteriorated trim components were replaced, together with hoses and shift cables as required for each installation.

Driveline

Replacing water-damaged components

Removal of the sterndrive revealed seawater and emulsified grease inside the drive bellows. Corrosion had affected the universal-joint assembly and gimbal bearing.

Both components were replaced. Propulsion maintenance also included an oil change and cleaning and greasing of the propeller shafts.

Operational tenders on completion

The work was completed with fresh oil and filters, bilge cleaning and the cooling, steering and driveline repairs.

The crew received maintenance and freshwater flushing recommendations suited to the installation, together with guidance on shift cables and the craft's stowage arrangements.
